3 out of 5 stars Users of older Macs Beware!   September 19, 2007

This Ipod looks great and feels great, it's the nicest paperweight on my desk. I'm sure it's pretty good at playing music too but unfortunately it isn't compatible with my OS. Now you might think I'm running some obscure version of Linux, or perhaps an outdated version of Windows, but I'm not, I'm running one of Apple's own operating systems, on a Mac mini, the whole setup is only two and a half years old. But when I plugged my shiny new classic in I am told that it is incompatible becaue I'm not running OSX 10.4.8! So there you have it I have to upgrade to OSX 10.4, which is 90 (Apple's own price) and will be replaced itself in a month or so by another OS upgrade costing more money! And I'm not alone, almost one third of Mac users have an OS below 10.4 so there's a 1 in 3 chance that if you have a Mac then this device won't work, and that's pretty poor going given that everything is made by the same company. So take not of the system requirements folks! incidentally it does work with Windows XP which is of similar vintage to OSX 10.3, Apple appear to be putting more effort into supporting Windows users than people who use their own OS, quite bizarre!

Great ipod all around i consider it a bargain only concerns people may have is.

1.No itunes CD so you need internet access (free download off Apple site)
2.No mains charger you have to charge it with the USB cable in your computer/laptop

other than that your laughing :).

I am at a loss of words. This is truly the best bang for your buck from the entire iPod range.

80GB for 159? Apple must be kidding us! The 30GB video iPod (5th generation) was that "costly" just a month ago! And now, they offer a device with 3x the storage capacity and overall just better:

So the predecessor was faulty and these were the negative feedback it received:

-battery life too short
-too little storage
-screen isn't bright and vivid enough
-the display menu is boring compared to the iPhone
-it's fat!
-too costly!!!
-(and most of all) the surface scratches way too easily!

Apple fixed ALL of that through the release of the iPod Classic:

-24h battery life (5h for video)
-storage now extended to 80 or 160 GB
-screen now brighter and clearer
-iPhone's unique Coverflow is adapted to the new iPod Classic, as well as the "album cover art drift" and search function
-it's thinner now!
-much cheaper for what you get!
-and last but certainly not least: the aluminium finish is ideal to make your iPod immune to scratches!

One important feature is the fact that with 80GB, you can make backups of all your personal data on your Pc, as well as upload almost all of the songs, photos and videos you possess without having to think about GB-shortage.

The iPod nano and iPod touch are also quite seductive, but in the end, it's the Giga Bytes that count. And the fact that you get 80GB for 159, while you have to pay 269 for only 16GB is insane!

So let me get this straight: you pay EXTRA money AND receive less GBs? And what for? Touch-screen and Wifi? Oh please. It'll turn out to be a huge ripoff after you've gotten used to the cool features.

So I say - stick with the classic and you won't regret it!

4 out of 5 stars Only real improvement is the price   September 12, 2007

Not really worth buying if you already have a video capable iPod with a sufficient capacity but if like me it is your first foray then it seems to make great sense.
This must be the first competitively priced mp3 player from Apple. 160 for 80 gigs is good value when you look around the market. iTunes software still beats the competition by a country mile and video is surprisingly watchable on the iPod's screen. It's still got a hard-drive rather than flash which isn't ideal but it's not really a problem.
If you've got 20+ gigs of music, have plans for more and want it all on the one player then there isn't really any alternative anyway but it's sweet to look at, seems well built and though I've only had it one day seems to work perfectly.
My only gripes are the crappy headphones bundled (although that seems to be standard industry practice) and the fact that they don't include that protective sleeve that they used to, which was useful against dust at least and did the job until you got something else.
Really though there are no major improvements to justify shelling out for this model if you have an iPod video.

5 out of 5 stars It is a lot better   September 10, 2007

The new 80GB Ipod classic is a lot better and the feel of the player is out of the world. It has a matt finish and looks so much cooler than the earlier glossy pod.
So people get your hand on to it before it runs out of stock.
