Dreadful November 9, 2008 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
This has got to be one of the worst films of its genre. I thought at first, and then realised, I was actually watching a bunch of clothes hangers with fabrics trying to act.
The script was so thin on value and character dimension you could have slipped a cigarette paper in between unnoticed. Even when trying to classify this as a bit of fluffy entertainment I felt completely let down.
It's always a bit sad when actresses past their prime of youth try to maintain a 'forever young' image and then look like they've been flayed for all their sins only to have had the skin re-applied by a oneyed butcher with two left hands.
The actresses looked like and acted as if they were just about ready to go into mummification, and the only thing that made them look alive were these garish clothes, cut to look as if they were made with the left-overs of a cloth remnants sale at Bergdorf Goodman's. Never even mind the hairdos effected in a windtunnel and then sprayed to perfection by a restyling crew of plasterers.
Miss SJP particularly looked as if she'd just been resurrected from Egypt's Antiquities collection, quickly filled with hot air which began to seep out during the making of this piece returning her to the original skin and bones look.
Sadly this piece of celluloid just about hovers below sublime ridicule. Straight to the bin to join Pearl Harbor DVD (2 Disc Set) [2001]....Oh Gawwd!
Don't even compare this with Mamma Mia! [2008] which is a treat.
An instant classic. November 3, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I must admit, when I read the rather poor reviews of this movie, I felt my heart sink into my boots. I figured I would wait for it to come out on DVD, because I just prefer watching SATC in the comfort of my own home, because these girls actually feel like a part of my life after 6 seasons of brilliance. The film did not disappoint. I loved the fact that it was one long episode, I was worried that the transition from small screen to big screen would be a difficult one, but they managed it excellently. The four girls are as memorable as ever, and we all knew that Carrie/Big saga was never going to be THAT easy, didn't we? I just thought, even for it's predictability, it was still a great movie, and one that you can just curl up on the sofa to as many times as you like, and it will never get boring. If you loved the show, you will love this.
Very average October 28, 2008 The best thing about the TV series was the cutting edge of cynicism which pervaded the comedy and made S&TC a sweet and sour experience. It's unlikely that anyone watching this would be unfamiliar with the TV series, but this film is no-where near as good.
The main problem is that it's too sentimental, although the characters stay roughly the same as they were, the script sells out the feel of the TV series. Carrie's framing comments are platitudes, and quickly become irritating. The film also introduces a secondary character, Louise from St Louis as an assistant to Carrie - to no real effect. The sub plots are all inauthentic to varying degrees. It's all as insubstantial as a soap bubble.
If you want to just look at the fashion it's absolutely fine, but the film was a real disappointment to anyone who loved the TV series for the wit and characterisation.
Disappointing October 27, 2008 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
As an avid fan of the TV series, I was hopeful that the winning formula of reality and humour would continue through to the movie.... alas I was wrong. Apart from a very funny sequence in Mexico, I didn't really find much to laugh about. Whilst I never really watched the series for the fashion, I found Carrie's style to have gone from 'kooky' to completely off the wall. And why would an intelligent woman of nearly 40 have given Big as many chances as she did? Not a great example for young independent women today. All in all, pretty disappointing.
