Amazon.co.uk Review
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End is a rollicking voyage in the same spirit of the two earlier Pirates films, yet far darker in spots (and nearly three hours to boot). The action, largely revolving around a pirate alliance against the ruthless East India Trading Company, doesn't disappoint, though the violence is probably too harsh for young children. Through it all, the plucky cast (Keira Knightley, Orlando Bloom, Geoffrey Rush) are buffeted by battle, maelstroms, betrayal, treachery, a ferocious Caribbean weather goddess, and that gnarly voyage back from the world's end--but with their wit intact. As always, Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow tosses off great lines; he chastises "a woman scorned, like which hell hath no fury than!" He insults an opponent with a string of epithets, ending in "yeasty codpiece."

In the previous The Curse of the Black Pearl, Sparrow was killed--sent to Davy Jones' Locker. In the opening scenes, the viewer sees that death has not been kind to Sparrow--but that's not to say he hasn't found endless ways to amuse himself, cavorting with dozens of hallucinated versions of himself on the deck of the Black Pearl. But Sparrow is needed in this world, so a daring rescue brings him back. Keith Richards' much ballyhooed appearance as Jack's dad is little more than a cameo, though he does play a wistful guitar. But the action, as always, is more than satisfying, held together by Depp, who, outsmarting the far-better-armed British yet again, causes a bewigged commander to muse: "Do you think he plans it all out, or just makes it up as he goes along?" As far as fans are concerned, it matters not. --A.T. Hurley

Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant! Bought this last year and every time I watch it, it still makes me laugh. What more can you say? Buy it, you wont be disappointed.

Sequels can get very self-absorbed but this one is chiefly notable for its excessive length, one begins to lose the will to listen after 40 minutes (so the plot appears unclear) and after an hour one hopes the heroes will be wiped out to allow us all to escape. I gave up in the end. Surely it could have been punchier than this?

2 out of 5 stars WHAT, NO KRAKEN??????!!!!!! (slight spoilers)   July 27, 2008

I will generously give this two stars because the production values are high - easy though with a 100 million dollar budget....
The core values, plot, pacing and structure are a mess!
I didn't like the first movie BUT I really enjoyed Dead Mans Chest with it's better and bigger setpieces. This, however, is a dissapointment and it's way, way too long!
What happened to The Kraken? One of the best elements of Dead Mans Chest is dealt with in a couple of sentences and a single VERY brief post-mortem scene. If you really enjoyed the cephalopodical attacks of the previous film then you are going to be very let down here!
It's not as if the film even offers us a better and bigger monster - all you get here is an enormous whirlpool and a 50 foot woman/sea goddess (looks ridiculous)!!
And as for the scenes where Jack Sparrow is in the afterlife - just a complete load of tosh - Even Johnny Depp looks bored by now!
There's plenty of fighting at the film's climactic battle (which is impressive visually) but by that time I was GENUINELEY nodding off! It was difficult to see who was even fighting who amongst all the CG ships, giant waves and whirlpools! Fair play, the CG on the water elements (notoriously difficult to animate)is outstanding.
Not the worst ever film, but a dissapointment after an excellent second installment. I doubt I would ever watch it again.

2 out of 5 stars Please! No More   July 26, 2008
I loved the first one. The second was disappointing. But this! This movie is a blatent attempt by the makers to cash in with little or no respect for the movie going public that lines Disney's pockets. The plot is flabby and absurd. The acting from Knightly and Bloom is embarressing. even Johnny Depp cannot save this picture, though, fair play to him, his does his upmost. Indeed he and Keith Richards are the only things that make this movie worth watching. If you haven't seen it but enjoyed the first one then my advice is to avoid this. Don't let it ruin you memories of a good film!

1 out of 5 stars very poor indeed   April 18, 2008

I'm glad that I only wasted 30 minutes of my life on this film.
It made no sense.
I have no idea what was going on.
My wife had no idea what was going on.
She loves the other Pirates movies and asked me to switch this one off. Which we did.
It's hard to believe that someone thought this was good enough to release.
Please don't reward these people by renting or buying this rubbish, it will only encourage them to make more.
