4 out of 5 stars Great but can scratch fridge   October 25, 2008

I agree with all the above reviewers that this is fantastic. My two girls have enjoyed this over the last couple of years. However, when we got a new fridge with a brushed steel effect, we noticed that this left scratch marks when the kids moved it around the fridge doors (the kids slide it around). It was okay on our old white fridge though.

4 out of 5 stars Useful learning tool   June 16, 2008

My daughters are 3 and know most of the letters of the alphabet but not all. They are showing a real interest in learning to read and so I thought this might be an easy way of helping them to learn the rest of the letters. Although the picture shows the letters as upper case, when it arrived it had the lower case letters, which was actually what I would have preferred (the product advertised with lower case couldn't be delivered to Germany). I think this toy will help them learn their letters but I have a couple of reservations: 1) it does both the name and sound of the letters, which I think is a bit confusing, especially as some letters have 2 sounds. 2) It is sometimes a bit difficult to make out the sound properly so that some sounds are similar. 3) For some letters the sound is different to the one that I have already taught them, for example for the letter L, the sound is 'ull', whereas I have taught them 'luh' (I would have thought both sounds appropriate for this letter) 4) the 'songs' are rather unimaginative. I thought there would be some examples of words beginning with each letter.

Altogether, not a bad toy to help them learn their letters in a fun way but I would recommend you get it before you have taught them anything yourself so that you can be consistent.

5 out of 5 stars a very good buy   June 18, 2007

My daughter has enjoyed playing with this toy for the last six months - she is now 2 3/4.

She loves the toy & enjoys recognising the letters & playing with them (on their own as well as with the unit).

No miracles in reading, but she can see her own name, M for mama; D for dada and several of the other letters.

Something that takes as much repetition as learning the alphabet is strongly encouraged by a toy like this. She is now becoming interested in what words are & how to spell them.

As it sits quietly on the fridge, and is available to play with whenever we are in the kitchen, it is an educational "free lunch".

We got our unit with UPPER CASE letters. Check this out; there is an UPPER CASE expansion pack if you buy a unit with lower case letters. Ultimately, you will want both.

5 out of 5 stars Just brilliant   June 22, 2006

I bought this when my daughter was 15 months old. I stuck it on to the fridge for her to play with due to the songs and colours, but had absolutely no expectations due to her age. How wrong was I? By 16 months she knew all the alphabet and their sounds. I didn't realise until I was sat reading with her one day and she started to point the letters out to me. To say I was amazed is an understatement. Definately recommend.
