Amazon.co.uk Call of Duty returns, and to many people’s surprise, it’s going back to World War II. While original series creators Infinity Ward brought the series into the modern day, developer Treyarch are setting out to make the definitive historical first-person shooter. The Soviet attack on Berlin features intense street battles | Take on the Japanese navy as you board a U.S. flying boat | World at War features the most realistic fire effects ever | The new ability to swim adds to both the story and multiplayer modes | The game is primarily set in the Pacific theatre and has a much more realistic, violent tone requiring less-linear game play than previous Call of Duty installments. You'll struggle to survive Japanese attacks without mastering new gaming skills, like swimming or how to use a flamethrower--a weapon that packs some punch in the fully destructable game world. Also featured is a campaign on the Eastern front, where you take control of a soldier in the Soviet Red Army during the attack on Berlin in the closing stages of the war. The game also includes the series’ first co-op mode, while the competitive multiplayer mode aims to build upon the achievements of Call of Duty 4 and add to the game’s longevity. Key Features - Dual campaigns: Fight in two very different World War II battles. Take on the Japanese Imperial army in the Pacific, and liberate Berlin as part of the Soviet Red Army.
- Grim realities: Experience the most bloody and realistic combat ever seen in the series, as you witness enemy atrocities and wield horrific new weapons such as the flamethrower.
- Job with benefits: Revamped competitive multiplayer mode features useable vehicles and an expanded perks system from Call of Duty 4.
- Brothers in arms: For the first time, a Call of Duty game features a four-player co-operative mode that’s playable online or via a split screen option on the same console.
- Modern graphics: The game uses an enhanced version of the Call of Duty 4 graphics engine, with wood that splinters realistically when shot and fires that spread organically.
About the Developer: Treyarch One of publisher Activision’s biggest internal studios, Treyarch have worked on many of the company’s best known titles, from the Spider-Man movie tie-ins and spin-offs to several of the Call of Duty sequels and the new James Bond game, Quantum of Solace.

Complete Rubbish November 23, 2008 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I am completely amazed at these reviews..4 and 5 stars for this game. The graphics are average. The sound effect are at best rubbish..You cant roam about, only 20 feet or so from the path you have to follow. Its like some old PS2 game. The online game,is the worst ive seen.Just look at those tanks for example, they should be in a PS1 game..and you dont walk,it feels as if you are gliding on air.It feels so fake.Anyone who thinks this is unfair should play Battlefield or Ghost Recon online. They are quality games which have set the standard..call of duty world ar war is a long way behind.
Excellent but not as good as COD4 November 23, 2008 This game is excellent and a must to buy - particularly in the build up to xmas!!
Why I liked it: Some great game play in the main campaign and intense battles which will put you on the end of your seat. The visuals are spectacular and there are some great new ideas e.g japanese in trees, "bonsai" and the fun flame thrower!! There is a good variety of maps, in fact I would say there are better maps on this game than any other WW2 game Ive played. This leads me on to the main gripe I have with the latest installment. I feel like we've done WW2 to death (literally!). How much further can that period be taken. When plaing COD5 it feels like I am playing any other "brothers in arms" "Medal of honour" or previous COD. What COD4 did was take COD into new exciting territory. This game fails to do that. There are some neat weapons and the way the enemy goes down when shot shows attention to detail but its just a progression and re-packaging of something that has already been done to a large degree. This is why I am glad to hear that COD6 is being made by the same people as 4 and will take us back to modern warfare. Unfortunately, this is not the case with 5. A great game and plenty of fun... just doesnt quite live up to COD4 which it was always going to be judged against.
Want the latest games? Here's how to get them for a fiver November 23, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Christmas is coming so save your cash! Why purchase something you can get for a fiver.
Go to consolegifts.net and sign up. Complete ONE offer- I would recommend Gala Bingo (you know, the one Sharon Osborne advertises for on tv),as this is cheap and fun (and you might win some money in the process!). If you really don't want to spend, there is a free Lovefilm trial.
All companies are well known so there is no risk involved- give it a go! I got my Ipod and many other things this way, so don't miss out.
I was a sceptic once but now I am SO glad I gave it a chance. BBC approved this system on their Newsnight programme a while back.
You choose the games from; PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, DS Lite or even PSP.
They send your games Free of charge
Enjoy!
Call of Duty - World at War November 22, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This fantastic addition to the Call of Duty series takes the player on a whistlestop tour of the Pacific and European battlefields in the final days of WWII. For the first time a game displays graphic original film footage from the period, including executions by shot to the head as well as vivid images of the languid cachectic bodies of the condemned, executed by hanging. Indeed, for the first time, the player is instructed by a Russian comrade to execute German soldiers in cold blood. A flamethrower is also added to the player's arsenal of weapons and munitions.
There is a striking development in both the visual and audio quality of this game, both in terms of enemy A.I., plus great attention to the minutiae of graphical and audio detail which truly results in a superior, more lifelike, realistic and involving gaming experience. For example, enemy soldiers move far more realistically and die more authentically than in other games.
The multiplayer option is intended for up to four players while the multiplayer format, options and menus are distinctly similar to the game's forebears, as is the default control layout on the controller. "Call of Duty - World at War" learns much from others' rather less successful past game offerings. This game has been created wisely and with substantial forethought and as a result is the sort of game to which one would choose to return to play many times.
cod 5 November 19, 2008 Having been a huge fan of these games, i could not wait for this to come out, and i was perticularly pleased to hear it was going to be back in world war 2. After playing this, i have to say it is as expected a great game. The most notable feature is the addictive online mode, which is as great as ever. Gameplay is excellent, and the graphics sum up next generation gaming these days. However, i dont think this is as fun as cod 4. I was the first person to applaud them going back to ww2. However, the weaker weapons are a huge factor for gamers who like the online side like myself. If this had been the follow up to cod 3, then this would be a magnificent follow up. But i am afraid modern warfare is much more entertaining, due to the added technology. But as a follow up to cod 4, it doesnt quite leave me as breathless as its predecessor. However, this is a great game, dont get me wrong. Buy it, and you will be entertained for hours. Campaign: very entertaining. Online: stick to cod 4
