OK November 21, 2008 This game looks great, but if you are one of those people who doesnt like reapeating things over and over then dont buy this. Most of the time you simply dont have enough weapons/ ammo, so it takes you about 10 goes to complete a small section. This can get very boring !! Also the aliens appear from no where you have no indication of where they are coming from and when you try to run from them to get a better point to shoot... guess what you bump into a door or a box that materializes from no where !! Apart from the few annoyances, the game is pretty creepy, weird noises and pretty gruesome aliens, when you get killed which is frequent, the killing seaquence can be a bit drawn out !! I have found myslef shouting at the screen ' I get the point' as an alien slashes you for the 20th time ! Rent it first !
A masterclass in atmospheric gaming November 20, 2008 Wow, where did this come from?
After not really knowing too much about Dead Space, I picked it up on a whim with Far Cry 2, and boy oh boy... what an amazing surprise it turned out to be.
Providing what is without doubt the most atmospheric gaming experience I have ever had, Dead Space plays like a combination of the movies Aliens, Event Horizon and The Thing as you navigate a devastated space craft trying to find out what happened to the crew. You'll be in genuine terror at times as you desperately fight to survive some horrifying looking creatures and some masterful set pieces that make this one of the year's best new games.
It looks stunning to boot, with detailed, smooth visuals that perfectly create the right atmosphere with moody lighting effects and large scale areas coupled with some really impressive 'space walking' sequences and a genuinely haunting score/soundtrack combined with brilliant voice acting and a superior plot make this one big scary pot of awesome.
I cannot recommend Dead Space highly enough. If you like survival horror, you will not do better. Buy it.
A must have November 10, 2008 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have been hooked to this game since purchasing it. The level of difficulty is just right, and the storyline and "whats behind this door" aspect keep you coming back.
As others have said, the graphics are stunning. In places, such as when you walk on to the bridge for the first time, I just looked at the screen and thought wow as you looked out over the planet into space with the asteroids hurtling towards you. The enemies are genuinely scary, the number of times I have not wanted to open a door for fear of what is making the noise behind it. The sound effects are excellent, there are times when you actually feel afraid walking down a corridor because you can hear the creatures scuttling down the vents in the roof.
Controls and gameplay are spot on. I'm now up to level 8 where difficulty is really starting to ramp up. You really do need to know how to use your different weapons and the weak spots on the different types of enemy. Its a truely atmospheric game, and dare I say, perfect in every way from the point of view of a good horror sci-fi game.
For me this is one of those must have games up there with COD4 and GTA4. Well done EA!

If you own a PS3 or Xbox, like survival horrors and want to play a genuinely scary and atmospheric game then you should look no further than Dead Space. I've had my eye on this for ages but to be quite honest I was expecting it to be a complete let down as it was made by Electronic Arts themselves and lets face it the only thing they're well known for is sports games nowadays. However, it seems they are turning over a new leaf.
First of all there will be lots of comparisons to Resident Evil 4 (which, was stunning on the Gamecube and my last Gen fave) and quite rightly so, but Dead Space only seems to take the good bits, build on them and then throw in loads of it's own fresh new innovative ideas. The Zero G moments genuinely are really cool.
Storywise it holds up quite solidly and will remind you of all sorts of films based in space. The graphics are stunning and along with the quite frankly perfect sound effects help to create a seriously cinematic atmosphere. A special mention has to be given to the lighting effects, which are thrown around so generously and look so smart that you'll find yourself looking back at things to check them out.
If you found the original Alien Vs Predator on the PC or Atari Jaguar nerve racking to play then this will certainly raise your heart rate and make you jump.
As far as people saying that this isn't all that scary then I suggest they play it on a big TV with all the surround sound cranked up and the lights turned off. There is no HUD in the games so you feel part of the game. It puts the recent Resident Evils to shame in the Scare factor.
Although Resi 5 will no doubt be another awesome game, it's certainly got some very strong competition here. Just hope EA don't go and give it a yearly update and create another cash cow bore.
Frighteningly great start to a new horror series November 6, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I'm a fan of survival horror games and must say that dead space is a great addition - it's s truly scary game for the most part with copious amounts of blood, great atmosphere, excellent use of sound, terrifying foes and some truly fun weapons. It does feel a bit contrived and eventually becomes just a go here, press this button, get attacked, move on type affair which could do with a bit more variation, but this is at least as scary as the RE series and a series that can run and run. Many people have said this is all cobbled together from great sci fi - how can that be a disappointment! I loved Event Horizon, I loved Alien - I love this game and I love the Rip saw weapon!
