At last we have exclusive Star Wars title for the Nintendo DS. The Clone Wars is an expansion of the Clone Wars animated film, due on DVD in December. A cargo of lightsaber crystals have been hijacked by an unknown enemy. Two Jedi are dispatched to investigate.
A beautiful intro sequence (and some wooden voice acting) takes us into the main game where we are presented with a choice of Jedi for the beginning of the mission. We have to choose any two from a choice of six Jedi, each with their own strength, force power and lightsaber type (colour of the blade). The Jedi are Anakin Skywalker, Ahsoka Tano (she's a Jedi in training), Obi-Wan Kenobi, Mace Windu, Plo Koon and Kit Fisto.
Movement and combat is entirely stylus driven. Drag the stylus across the screen to to effectivly take your character anywhere, and the second character automatically follows you. Combat is simple; tap on the enemy and the Jedi will hit out with the lightsaber, and you choose either high, middle or lower strikes by tapping on the enemy at those points. Your Jedi assistant will be busy fighting too, so you don't have to control them, or worry that you're fighting alone! Occasionally you will have control of the other character from your two Jedi, depending on the situation. There are some control issues where you will find yourself tapping over and over again to activate a switch or lever. The vastness of the locations and some of the rooms you enter means the camera pulls away to display the whole room sometimes, and your character can occasionally become barely visible, yet you still have to control them. It can be fiddly and annoying to control what you can barely see, but because it's Star Wars, we put up with it! The graphics are impressive and the locations are beautifully created, and gameplay is fun overall.
Checkpoints are far apart and you have to go way back sometimes if you die. If you turn off the DS, you start from the beginning of the mission when you switch back on later, and NOT from a particular checkpoint. You only start from the checkpoints when you're playing the game and lose the gained checkpoint when you turn off, but you do get a beginning of new level save.

Overall this is the ultimate DS Star Wars The Clone Wars game, despite some control issues, and fans of the Star Wars universe, be they young or old (i'm 34) will find the force is very much strong in this one.
