Amazon.co.uk Review
In a nutshell:
It's been over fifteen years since the last Super Mario Bros. but finally Mario is back in a proper 2D platforming adventure. Just because it's old school though doesn't mean it's old hat...

The lowdown:
Considering the last Super Mario Bros. game is still the best selling video game of all time (17.28 million copies and counting) this has a lot to live up to, but it almost effortlessly captures the action and charm of the old games. The basics of the game are the same as always as you run and jump through mostly horizontally scrolling levels. New to the game are power-ups that turn Mario into a giant or make him really tiny, as well as one that gives him a Koopa shell on his back to attack enemies with. Although the gameplay is all in two dimensions the graphics are 3D, with all new moves such as the triple jump and wall jump added in as well.

Most exciting moment:
As well as the single player mode there's also a wireless multiplayer mode where you get to battle a friend (as Luigi) across a whole bunch of specially designed levels.

Since you ask:
As Super Mario World on the SNES (since re-released as Super Mario Advance 2 on the GBA) was subtitled Super Mario Bros. 4 in Japan that name couldn't be used for this new game, although that's secretly whatever everyone's calling it - behind Nintendo's back.

The bottom line:
The impossible has happened: Nintendo have created a worthy follow-up to Super Mario Bros. 3!

Product Description
Twenty years after Nintendos biggest franchise was born, the Mario Bros. return in a dazzling, all-new platformer sure to set players fingers twitching. Fans from Marios classic days will see their dreams answered in this return to the Mushroom Kingdom, while a new generation of Mario players will learn what true platforming greatness means. Run, jump and battle enemies through multiple levels in each world. Every time players finish one world, they can move onto the next, but each level features impediments in the forms of fortresses, Hammer Bros. and bosses. After defeating the boss of each world, players can move on to the next, culminating in the final fight in the last world. Mario and Luigi can do all kinds of jump maneuvers: increasingly high triple jumps, wall jumps and high bounces off enemies. Mario also can use power-ups like Mushrooms (grow big), Fire Flowers (throw fireballs), Starmen (become invincible), Blue Shells (turn into a speedy, blue Koopa shell) and other mushrooms that make him tiny or huge. In addition to the main game and the wireless two-player mode, players also can use the touch screen to play tons of minigames (either by themselves or over DS Local Area Network with 1 to 4 players via DS Download Play). These include card games, targetbopping-type games and much more. Features: Jump, bounce and power-up through visually stunning side-scrolling worlds filled with Mushroom Kingdom madness. Mushrooms make Mario ultra-tiny or ultrahuge, and new items like the Blue Shell (which transforms Mario into a spinning shell that wipes out enemies) will keep players on their toes. The worlds are swarming with classic enemies like Goombas and Koopas, but watch out for new foes, big bosses and unbelievable challenges. As Mario and Luigi, two players can battle for stars on specially designed levels over local wireless. The game wont end until one bro. reigns supreme.

3 out of 5 stars good game but doesn't save??   November 14, 2008
i thought this game was really good. got onto world 3 then saved it and turned the ds off... turned back on to find the file saved was not longer there! this happened twice. I know it definitly saved because i loaded it back up whilst the console was still turned on, but as soon as i turned it off... it was gone.

5 out of 5 stars Wow What A Game!   November 6, 2008
Wow what a game, brill graphics, colour, updates, awesomeness and much much more! Totally, absolutely awesomely fantastic!!! Bit of advice - don't play too long - it's very addictive! There's also minigames as well which are awesome too and you can connect in mario vs luigi and also you can connect in minigames which is good fun! :) BUY IT! TOTALLY WORTH THE MONEY! :)

5 out of 5 stars greatest mario game ever released.   November 2, 2008
i got this for nintendo ds and as soon as i put this on i started playing it.the game is very enjoyable and you can either play as mario or luigi.on each level you must jump, hit and run your way through the entire stage until you reach the end.the charecters are also well made and there are awesome power ups to get.
of all the mario games ever made this an improvement.although i lost it but i might get it again soon.buy this game and you will not be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Miss F A   October 2, 2008
This is a really good game. I'd heard fab reviews on it so I bought it myself. It arrived quite slowly but I'd not picked express so nevermind.
At first, you watch a little video, explaining what's going on. Then you pick the first part of world one and carry on going. You can't change charactor, you have to be Mario, but then it makes sense. The games are mixed difficulty; some are easy and some are hard. It does get annoying because if you get stuck on a part of a world, you have to complete it before getting onto the next part. There are 8 worlds all together. In each world there is about 10 levels. Each world is set in a different place including, Desert, Space and a more homey setting. I wouldn't get this game if you get easily irritated with not being able to complete things easily. It's a good game to get you threw long journeys in the car, or just wanting to do something fun. You can also get games where you can play with another nintendo. In this, you can play minigames or Mario vs Luigi. Minigames are simply minigames where you play rounds with another person on another nintendo ds. You can play up to 3 other people on this (4 including yourself). I enjoy this as it is a laugh and a great amount of fun. Mario vs luigi is where you pick a setting (out of 5 different 1's) and you play against another nintendo by collecting stars, and making them lose. It's a competitive game and you easily get annoyed with the other person for getting something or making your person die, and go back to the begining. There's a short area for them to do what you aim for. In Mario vs Luigi you can only do 2 player. The good thing about multiplayer games is that you can connect to another nintendo person who doesn't have New Super Mario Bros. Overall this game is very good and I definately reccommend it.

5 out of 5 stars PURE PLATFORMING FUN ON THE MOVE - MARIO STILL RULES IN DS LAND   September 17, 2008
Although this was released nearly 2 years ago New Super Mario Brothers DS is still hanging around the top 20 and commanding full price in most Games outlets. Almost unique in the land of video games, and certainly unhead of in the handheld world, NSMB has proved a massive hit with adults (looking for retro fun) and their offspring alike. If you like platforming games then this is as good as it gets. Period.
The basic structure and design is as its always been - Mario runs, jumps and squishes baddies - but now its all beautifully presented and the levels are faultlessly designed. The difficulty is set just about right and there are enough hidden levels, bonus sections and secrets to unlock to ensure that you'll be playing this for months. This game actually rewards and encourages replay.
The ace up Mario's little red sleeve though is the mini games - all of which are unlocked from the start - and these can be played solo or with a friend. There are dozens of them - puzzle games, action, strategy and more - many of which are almost as wildly addictive as the main quest.
So the reason for NSMB longevity is simple - it's a terrifc family game and it's great value for money.
