The 1956 Version February 14, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I first saw this at the cinema in the '60s as a young teenager, and thought it was fabulous, so added it to my Amazon rental list. How disappointing! I now find it slow, if not positively turbid. It now seems to be merely a travelogue with bits of dialogue inserted between shots of sunsets, palaces, mountains etc, together with overlong traditional song and dance scenes. In the sixties, of course, most of us didn't have colour televisions and hadn't been abroad, so these things were exciting. Today, they're tedious. The only really enjoyable aspect of this film is spotting the guest stars (doesn't John Gielguid look young!) Unfortunately, this particular version is on two discs, but you only get the first with Amazon rental. You MUST tick the bonus disc as well when you order, as the first disc finishes at the "Intermission", so I didn't get to spot Frank Sinatra, et al.
Perhaps another time I'll remember that memories can lie!
MIX UP July 4, 2006 11 out of 18 found this review helpful
Amazon has mixed up two versions of Around the World in 80 Days - the Pierce Brosnan from 1988 and the David Niven from 1956 - I think. If you specifically want one or the other, BE CAREFUL!!!
