Amazon.co.uk Review Like a pumpkin that transforms into a carriage, some very shrewd casting (and the charisma of Julia Roberts, in particular) morphed this story of a Hollywood whore into a Disneyfied Cinderella story--and a mainstream megahit. This is the movie that made Roberts a star, her charms helping tremendously to carry viewers over the rough spots in the script (which was originally to be a cynical tale about prostitution called 3000--after the amount of money Richard Gere's character pays the prostitute to stay with him for the week). Gere is the silver-haired Wall Street knight who sweeps streetwalker Roberts into a fantasy world of room service at the Regent Beverly Wiltshire Hotel and fashion boutique shopping on Rodeo Drive. The supporting cast is also appealing, including Laura San Giacomo as Roberts's hooker pal, Hector Elizondo as the hotel manager, Jason Alexander, Ralph Bellamy and Hank Azaria. --Jim Emerson, Amazon.com On the DVD: With a beautiful bubble effect offering a touch of fantasy to the special features menu, the viewer might expect a disc packed with lavish offerings. Unfortunately the extras are a little more spartan than the menu would have us believe, consisting of a theatrical trailer and a cringe-worthy pop video of "Wild Women Do", complete with a bouncing camera and "arty" black-and-white shots. The worst of these features comes in the form of the "production trailer", a useless addition which attempts to briefly summarise the film's underlying themes with inter-cut comments from the actors and directors on the original trailer (already featured in its pure form on the disc) and which offers little additional information of any merit. The disc does, however, come into its own when Gary Marshall takes the helm for the director's commentary: he has an entertaining and amusing narrative style, which is upbeat and direct like his film, and his comments really bring to life the fairy-tale narrative. Add to this a widescreen 1.85:1 presentation, which will make you feel as if Richard Gere has just swept you off your feet. --Nikki Disney

Pretty ambiguous October 10, 2007 I've always had mixed feelings about this film. On the one hand it's a frothy romance that gets great performances out of Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, as well as the excellent supporting cast; it's a feel-good rom-com, playing out the fantasy of making good, love conquering all and changing lives for the better.
But on the other hand when you look at it, it's really morally dubious. The overall message seems to be "You might be a prostitute down on the strip, but all you need is a rich guy and all will be well". The section at the end when Kit de Luca (Vivian's friend) comes by the hotel, to demonstrate how she has grown while Kit has stayed the same, is downright offensive. The idea that life-chances depend upon dreams and fantasy rather than opportunities is typically American - the romantic equivalent of "the American dream".
All the same, the chemistry between Gere and Roberts is excellent, there's a real spark to them, and the development of their relationship (starting with discarding the blonde wig - prostitutes used to wear them apparently, hence why blondes have more fun) througb to the ridiculous cheesy ending is fun to watch.
Don't get this if you enjoy a cerebral film, or if you pick flaws with things. But if you like fun rom-coms, well this is right up there.

Loved it! Much better than all those Cinderella remakes. (A Cinderella story, etc)

Pretty woman is an amazing film! I love it, its funny, witty, and shows a lot of morals, Richard Gere is simply amazing in this film. It is a must see, and I can watch this film over and over agian, though the end disappointed me slightly, it was overly cheesy and not very special.

I love this film. Julia Roberts before she got her head blown to the size of Brazil! In more recent films she comes across as arrogant and loving herself - but this is great. She seems so fresh - and you actually get to see some acting skills displayed, rather than just a film making a million out of her smile! If you like her - go see it, if you don't like her - definately go see it. Richard Gere is fantastic and the chemistry between them is great - his 'steadyness' with her energy and...... youth i guess! And the title track is a brilliant song too. If you haven't already seen it - you jus gotta!
Roberts and Gere First Feel Good January 6, 2005 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Prepare to wipe your eyes. This tearjerker film is a Cinderella story in disguise. A young Julia Roberts stars as an American streetwalker who gets picked up and paid to be millionaire Richard Gere's date. Despite this arrangement, they fall in love. But in the meantime, you will love the adorable Julia Roberts in this early film.
