5 out of 5 stars Great bit of kit   September 25, 2008

This is great bit of kit - I'd been meaning to get a garden shredder for years, and after after trolling through various reviews I decided on the Bosch AXT 2200.
Unlike one of the other reviewers, I am not using it to clear a rainforest, just lots of small branches and other cuttings.
What previously would have been a numerous visits to the tip with an estate car filled to the brim with branches, is now reduced to five densly packed rubbish bags.
Why didn't I buy one years ago?
Greatly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Very good, but.......   September 16, 2008

Excellent tool, does the job well and well worth the money. Easy to use and efficient.

On the down side, after a few uses (say about an hour) the blade was blunt and unless changed the mulcher clogged up quickly. It was used for only light mulching (eg. sweet pea plants, runner bean plants, hedge trimmings), no wood branches above 1 cm. diameter. After I turned the blade over for replacement and it was great for another couple of weeks until that also got blunt causes constant blockages after an hour or two of use. Replacement blades are not cheap, almost 12 pounds each.

On the plus side although the manual states that the blades cannot be resharpened, I nevertheless resharpened mine and they were good for another hour or so.

The only other minor niggle is that blockages were fairly frequent, admittedly I was using a lot of "green" material but if the outlet throat width of the mulcher were a couple of centimeters deeper I think most of these blockages might have been avoided.

Despite these comments I'm delighted with the shredder/mulcher, it makes composting so much more effective.

4 out of 5 stars Does what it says it does   August 28, 2008

I bought mine a few days ago. I had been looking for some time to get one so that I can shred all my garden waste, especially branches. So far so good. Easy to assemble and to use. It can get jammed a little sometimes, but if you stick to putting no less than 4cm wide bits, you should be fine. It's not as loud as I expected it to be, but still be considerate with your neighbours when using it. And try and be green! turn it off while you're not shredding. Be careful not to put any cardboard as I tried to shred some and it got stuck inside, I had to open the whole thing up to take it out.

We bought this following a Which? review saying it was the most efficient garden shredder they had tested - we have not been disappointed. In use it has shredded everything we put into it. Branches up to 4cm were sliced into 1mm chips; leaves were chopped into small pieces. With some smaller branches, particularly green ones, the shredder removed the leaves and left a few twigs about 10cm long, although most were chopped into tiny pieces.

It's not particularly noisy when switched on, but with harder and bigger pieces of wood it was noisier, especially when a bit of wood would rattle around inside the machine before it could be shredded. I didn't feel it would be necessary to wear ear defenders for temporary usage, nor loud enough to feel that the neighbours would complain about the noise. Given that it's almost half the price of Bosch's quiet shredder the HP, this machine is very good value. I would recommend wearing thick gardening gloves as it could snatch branches.

Assembling it took about 5 minutes. This was a matter of attaching the wheels and their frame and working out where the supplied allen key is supposed to be stored.

We also bought the partnering storage bag from Amazon. It's a bit like the blue storage bags Ikea sell at their checkout desks, except this one's a lot more expensive but of a similar quality and maybe a bit bigger.
